Job Description
This is an opportunity to deliver high-quality, one-to-one tuition for pupils from Key Stage 1 through to Key Stage 4 in both Maths and English. As an SEN Tutor with Prospero Teaching, your role will focus on working with vulnerable children who are unable to access mainstream schooling because of Special Educational Needs (SEN) or Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges.
Your working hours will be approximately 10 to 20 per week, term-time only, with sessions scheduled between about 9am and 3pm. You will be expected to travel locally around Lancashire (including towns such as Preston, Blackburn, Burnley, Chorley and surrounding areas) to meet pupils in community settings or in their homes, subject to safeguarding arrangements.
Each tutoring session is fully tailored to individual pupils’ needs. You will assess learning gaps, build confidence, and engage students with strategies that support both academic skills and emotional resilience. Sessions may involve core subject teaching, reinforcement of curriculum content, reading, writing, arithmetic, problem-solving, and encouraging participation. You will also keep records of pupil progress and liaise (where necessary) with parents, carers or other professionals to ensure consistency of support.
The contract is flexible and ongoing. Pay is between £27-£30 per hour, depending on your experience, qualifications, and SEN background. The work gives you the freedom to choose when (during the designated hours) and where you teach, so long as you fulfil the agreed commitment each week.
Eligibility & How to Apply
To be considered for this SEN Tutor position, you should meet the following criteria:
- You have at least **two years’ experience** working with pupils with SEN or SEMH in the UK.
- You are confident delivering both Maths and English in line with the UK National Curriculum from KS1 through KS4.
- While **QTS (Qualified Teacher Status)** is desirable, it is not essential if you can demonstrate strong experience in SEN tuition.
- An Enhanced DBS check registered on the Update Service, or willingness to apply for one, is required.
- You are able to travel locally within Lancashire and have a patient, empathetic, and adaptable approach to working with children in non-mainstream learning settings.
If you meet the eligibility requirements and are interested, here’s how to apply:
- Prepare an up-to-date CV that highlights your experience with SEN/SEMH learners, your tutoring work (especially 1:1 sessions), and your qualifications (including any SEN training, QTS or equivalents).
- Include a cover letter or statement explaining why you are passionate about SEN tutoring, and how you tailor your approach to learners with additional needs (both academic and emotional/behavioural).
- Ensure you have or are willing to obtain an Enhanced DBS check (if you don’t already have one) and you can travel locally within Lancashire.
- Visit the official application page via the link below or to the “Apply” button. Submit your CV and supporting documents as instructed.
- If shortlisted, be prepared for informal interviews or conversation around your approach, experience, and scenario-based questions relating to SEN or SEMH settings.
